Being that I have been unplugged since Friday, I just wanted to say happy birthday to Child #1. Sunday was Monkeyboy's 13th birthday and I cannot believe how fast the years have gone.
He is now officially a teenager. Heck, now I am officially the mom of a teenager. I do not feel old enough to be a mom to a teenager. Well, at least not usually. Just sometimes. Like when they are driving me crazy.
I had a vision of a perfect, ginormous cupcake looking as masculine as a cupcake can look, but it was not to be. I didn't take a picture of it because well, it would have blinded all of my readers. Yes, it was that bad. After we sang Happy Birthday, I actually threw it out. Did another do-over on Monday and the cake in the picture is the result. My heart was in the right place, just not my decorating. Good thing Monkeyboy was such a good sport. Fact is, he hasn't stopped laughing at my skills, or...the lack of I should say. :)
I did redeem myself with the most awesome gift ever, so I will just go with what I know. Shopping and buying a cake someone else has decorated.
So, regardless of my decorating failings, Happy Belated 13th Birthday Monkeyboy!
Welcome to the teenage years! May they be filled with less eye-rolling and drama than the tween years. And may you continue to be the smart, funny, caring and kooky kid you are!
Love ya!
Mom
Note: Please disregard the sad, leaving much to be desired cake. It is a painful reminder of my inability to decorate anything requiring frosting and decorating tips. This is being posted as a public service to all my readers. Never ask my advice on cake decorating. The proof is in the frosting!
Note #2: FYI-This is the second cake I made for Monkeyboy's birthday. Like I mentioned previously, the first was a ginormous cupcake that did not turn out well at all. Apparently, I should have sucked it up and just bought a more appealing to the eyes cake. The plus side to the ugly cake pictured above was that it tasted delicious. Monkeyboy thought my attempts to create the perfect looking cake were hilarious. He hasn't stopped laughing. Sigh. I promised him next year, I would supply a store-bought cake and spare him my decorating experiments!
