For the past few weeks, the kids have been driving me crazy to make a new dessert. Actually, they have been begging me to serve anything but pizza for dinner and so I convinced Mike to fire up the grill, BBQ some chicken, grill some corn in the husk and I made some rice and veggies. It was delicious and way better than pizza-let me tell ya!
And dessert-well, I decided to try something new. Last week Philly Cream Cheese started following my Twitter Tweets. I clicked on their site and they had this awesome recipe for Creamy Oreo Pie. Those of you who have been reading my blog know about my obsession with Oreo's and anything made with them and my children have the same obsession. Quite frankly, just like some people have milk, bread and eggs as a staple, well, we have Oreo's.
Sigh.
Double Stuffed.
Diet-epic FAIL.
Sooooo, anyway, I happened to tell Panda that I had seen a recipe online for an Oreo Pie and she was all "Please, please can you make it?"
Now tell me, would you refuse that child?
Ummm...yeah, just not when it concerns Oreo's because then it is beneficial for me too.
Just saying.
So after school Friday, her and I went to our local Super Target and picked up the ingredients we didn't already have-like more Oreo's, Philadelphia Cream Cheese and the Cool Whip. We also bought some foil pie pans because well, throw away containers are all good.
And yesterday, we commenced Creamy Oreo Pie making.
Panda crushed up the Oreo's and was cackling the whole time because really, anytime she can be smacking something, without being reprimanded, she is all over that.
The actual pie making, she left up to me. You can find the original recipe here.
I did tweak the recipe itself to better suit the sweet-tooth-Oreo-obsession members of my family. Feel free to use either recipe.
Oh, and by the way, it was delicious. So, so yummy that even Mini Me ate it-and remember he doesn't even like chocolate.
Also, I paid for the ingredients out of my own pocket and was not asked to make the pie by Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Truly, I need no excuse for trying out new dessert recipes. It was all the power of persuasion by Panda and my love of anything Oreo.
Here's the tweaked version of the recipe (the original can be found at Philly's site):
2 pkgs Double Stuffed Oreos
(44 Oreo Cookies, divided)
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1 pkg. (8 oz.) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar
2 pkgs (8 oz. each) Cool Whip Whipped Topping
(2 cups thawed Cool Whip Whipped Topping for actual recipe)
CRUSH 28 of the cookies; mix with butter until well blended. Press firmly onto bottom and up side of 9-inch pie plate. Refrigerate while preparing filling.
CHOP 14 of the remaining cookies; set aside. Beat cream cheese and sugar in medium bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add chopped cookies and whipped topping; stir gently until well blended. Spoon into prepared crust.
REFRIGERATE at least 2 hours or until firm. Spoon 4 heaping tablespoons of Cool Whip into large plastic Ziplock. Knead Cool Whip into bottom corner, snip off bottom corner of Ziplock and pipe Cool Whip around the entire edge of the pie. Pipe a small circle of Cool Whip in the center of pie. Halve remaining 2 cookies; stand on cut edges in Cool Whip center of pie. Store leftover pie in refrigerator.
**Note**
I placed the Oreos in a Ziplock bag to crush. Whatever remaining crumbs were left in the bag, I sprinkled on the top part of the pie.
